Miniature Pinscher Dog Houses

If your dog is spending or going to spend a lot of time outside, dog houses are a must. Remember we've said in several places that dogs are den animals, (see our section on dog crates ), and need to feel comfortable and secure. The right house will provide for all your dog's needs.

Before we get into sizing, let's quickly mention the position of your dog house. This is expecially important if you live in a colder climate. It may seem obvious, but make sure you place the opening or door of the dog house on the opposite side of the prevailing winter winds.

Remember dogs are not like people and don't need a door large enough for them to walk right in. In fact, too large a door will only increase any draft he might receive. Instead, the door should be about an inch or two taller than the measurement from the top of your pet's shoulder to the bottom of his chest. This will allow him easy entry into his new home.

Once inside, again too big can be a problem, especially if you live in the aforementioned cold climate. The larger the inside, the lower the retention of body heat. You'll want it just big enough for him to stand up and turn around in. As a general rule, the peak should be about 25% bigger than the dog from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. You can go as much as 50% bigger and he'll still be comfortable and keep his body heat.

The 25% figure is also good for determining the length of the dog house. It will enable him to move and turn around easily and still retain his body heat.

Something worth considering is a removable roof. This is for your benefit and not the dogs. A removable roof will make for much easier cleaning.

We don't recommend putting food and water bowls inside unless they are secured so they cannot be knocked over. Spilled food and water can create a number of problems as we detailed in our section on dog bowls .

Finally, another obvious one but worth mentioning. If your dog is a puppy, remember he will grow. And unless you're getting you pet in the dead of winter, it's best to get a house based on his size when full grown. Either that or be prepared to buy several dog houses during the life of your pet.

Now check out our selection of dog houses and pick the proper size for your pet. Put some comfortable bedding inside and your set to go.
